Being successful means different things to different people. No matter what it means to you, we all want it. Nobody wants to be a failure. Having said that, let us look at four ways to achieve it.
Keep Yourself Accountable
It is your decisions and the choices you make that yield either good or bad results. Your parents, teachers, and company superiors can tell you what to do, but if you don’t want to do them, you won’t.
Don’t do the right thing because you have to or because you will be punished if you don’t. Do it because it will make your life better. Do it because you are a responsible human being, and you want to keep yourself accountable.
One way to do this is to have a constant reminder, whether it is a message on your phone or a customized silicone ring. There is great power in reading or looking at something daily. It serves as a prompt for you to act.
Choose Your Relationships Carefully
A great relationship, be it a friend, a colleague, or a spouse, brings out the best in you. It inspires you to get up early, work hard, and go past your limits. A bad one will do the exact opposite. It will bring out the worst. It will demotivate you, make you feel exhausted, and, worst of all, waste your time.
But how do you know when to fight for somebody and when to let go? If you’re married or in a relationship, how can you figure out whether you should keep working at it or file for divorce?
Only you know the answer to these questions. And if you don’t it starts by being honest with yourself, knowing how that person makes you feel, and being clear about the expectations that you have.
None of us need that many friends or relationships in our lives. Those who say they have hundreds might be mistaking them for acquaintances. A few good ones are more than enough.
Be True to Who You Are
Everybody wants to be accepted and feel as though they are part of a group. As kids, we try out for the basketball and soccer teams. We join the school music group or take part in a theater troupe. As we get older, we build social networks and take part in community and work activities. There is nothing wrong with this.
Sometimes, however, our need to please others and gain their acceptance makes us something we are not. It turns us into what people think we should be instead of who we are.
Of course, people need to change if they want to improve. They need to be flexible and open-minded to different ideas and concepts. Still, the most important thing is to know the difference between changing for the better and doing things for people to like you.
So learn to discern and focus on understanding your true self and what that entails.
Health is Wealth
There is no way to control everything in your life. Most of the time, control is an illusion. We plan things, and we are as detailed as possible, yet other things get in the way, and our plans fall apart.
But, we can be proactive in those few instances when we have a choice. Perhaps the most important of these choices is what we put inside our bodies and what we do externally. We can choose to take the stairs a few days a week instead of the elevator. We can decide on eating fruit like a banana or an apple instead of drinking a can of coke or eating a piece of chocolate. And if we do choose the chocolate, we can pick the one with fewer calories.
By making conscious decisions about our health we are giving ourselves the best chance to a long, fulfilling, fruitful life. Plus, we are putting money in the bank. We are saving on future health expenses like doctors and drugs by taking preventative measures.
As obvious as it might sound, without our health, our money is useless, and we won’t be able to enjoy our lives.
Success in life is not guaranteed. Still, there are measures we can take. These include keeping ourselves accountable, choosing our relationships, staying true to who we are, and being as healthy as possible. If we do this, we will find ourselves on the right path to get it.
