Remedies for Stiff Necks

A stiff neck is usually a result of a muscle strain or sprain. Here are a few ways you can deal with that lingering ache in your neck. Some of them require extra help but most of this can be achieved from the luxury of your home. Here are some remedies for stiff necks.

Rest.

Not doing any strenuous activity for a few days will provide the tissue in your necks time to heal, which eventually will aid in relieving the stiffness and possible muscle spasm in your neck. Everything in moderation though, as over 1-2 days and the neck can get even stiffer, as too much inactivity will lead to the muscles of the neck turning hard and weak muscles will have to struggle to provide support to the head and breathing track.

Cold or heat therapy.

Cold therapy or ice packs will usually help in relieving most types of stiffness by reducing the inflammation in the affected area. Applying an ice pack in the crucial 1 or 2 days after the injury will aid in the pain and stiffness significantly. Alternatively, applying heat to the neck can promote vasodilation, when the blood vessels become wider and more blood flows through to the neck which fosters a better healing environment. Some patients prefer ice, whereas others prefer heat. Both may be used when appropriate.

Over-the-counter medications.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which basically aid in reducing inflammation, are doctor prescribed when it comes to reducing neck ache. A good example of this is Ibuprofen. Even nonprescription medications have risks, possible side effects, and drug (or food or supplement) interactions, so before self-medicating, be sure to consult your local doctor. Medicine such as paracetamol has been known to help in neck ache.

Gentle stretching.
